Health and Healing Worldwide
Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on eagle’s wings.’  Isaiah 40. 29 - 31
This is the focus for the Christians Aware conference - held - January13 - 15  2023 at Swanwick.
In 1978 the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children’s Fund held a conference on
primary health care in Alma Ata in the USSR.  The conference called for urgent change in health services
throughout the world so that there would be increased equity.  The suggestion was that resources would
move from hospitals to community health care.
The goal was ‘Health for all by the year 2000’.
The goal has obviously not been reached, even now in 2022.  Glaring inequalities continue.  Goal 3 of the
Sustainable Development Goals is ‘Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages,’ and this
commitment was reaffirmed in 2019.  Progress was being made but it is now seriously threatened by the
spread of COVID 19.  The response to COVID by the countries of the world has been and still is a far
from equal response.  The situation is very serious because lack of progress in Goal 3 affects progress in
many of the other sustainable goals.  Lack of progress in health care affects all of life in every country of
the world.
The conference offers participants the opportunity to learn about health and healing worldwide from
excellent speakers and seminar leaders.  For example, Rachel Carnegie is Executive Director of the
Anglican Alliance, Mike Wooldridge is a former BBC Africa correspondent, Ruth Wooldridge is specialist
in palliative care and Peter Rookes is coordinator of the interfaith health and healing forum in the West
Midlands.
