Visit to Lebanon

Led by Andrew Ashdown

This is on the 1-8 October 2012

Location:  Lebanon

Looking towards Europe, but a gateway to the Middle East, Lebanon Is a country of huge cultural and religious diversity.  For years, a centre of conflict between its diverse religious and ethnic groups, and a target of Israeli attack, Lebanon is nevertheless a fascinating and largely safe country in which to travel.  The people are extremely friendly, and the country is known for its outstanding cuisine.  This visit will combine an attempt to gain some insight into the country’s history and diversity, and the contemporary context by meeting a variety of local people.  We shall cross the Chouff and ante-Lebanon mountain ranges to visit the Bekaa Valley and the remains of Baalbek, which rank as one of the finest ancient sites anywhere in the world.  We shall also visit other historic places from different eras; one or two of the mediaeval monasteries in the beautiful Qadisha Valley in northern Lebanon.  In Beirut we shall visit the Middle East School of Theology, visit a Refugee camp; worship with the local Anglican congregation; and meet with religious and political experts on the current situation. This is a comparatively short visit but promises to be an unforgettable one.
