The Christians Aware Annual Conference focused on the Millennium
Development Goals with the strong emphasis on people being at the centre
of all our work and concern. The question of what it is to be human is
vital but before that comes the question of survival in an increasingly
divided world. The real challenge for every person is to work for
relationships around the world, so that any work for the goals is shared
work between people who are equals in status and in dignity. There is no
point in sticking narrowly to the goals, but rather the need to look at
the spirit of the goals for the whole world. Speakers at the conference
included the new chairman of Christians Aware: Bishop Alan Wilson, Miranda St.John Nicolle, Bishop Bill Ind and John Wesley Kabango from
Rwanda.

We are in the middle of our summer visits course in Leicester. I had been before to most of the places we are visiting this year but there is always something new to learn and old and new friends to meet. On the course we have previously visited the Orthodox Synagogue in Highfields, Sri Sanatan Mandir in Belgrave and the Buddhist Amida Trust in Narborough.

Our latest visit was to the Jain Temple, built in the 1980s when sandstone was brought, already carved, from India. The stained glass windows tell the story of Lord Mahavir. During this visit we were there while people were meditating within the temple area.

We were told by our guide that hungry Jains would not cut down a fruit tree or even take a branch, but would first of all look for any fruit under the tree. They might pluck fruit from the tree as a last resort.

Next week we go to the Dominican Priory at Holy Cross in the centre of Leicester.

We have just come back to the office from our summer school in Bishop Woodford House in Ely. We had an enriching week, with excellent talks and discussions and delicious food.

Our focus was ‘The Environment and Rural Issues.’

There will be a presentation in the magazine in the Autumn, including photographs and impressions from many of those who took part.

We had friends from many parts of the world with us in Ely including Iraq, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.

Kenya was well represented, with four people joining us at one time or another. Bishop Timothy Ranji gave a talk on environmental issues in Kenya. He also told us about his week at Common Work in Kent.

Subash Chellaiah spoke about Little Elephants Pre-School in South India which he and his wife Ruth are setting up with our support.

Many issues came out of the summer school for our future work. One important one is the question of how we work for fair trade and at the same time work for justice for British farmers. There will be more study, discussion and perhaps a day conference on this.

Do read the Autumn magazine and find out more about our summer school. There will also be a new ‘Listen to India’ section. Do send contributions for this or for our ‘Listen to Africa’ section.

Barbara
